Title: Who Says You're Dead? Pdf Medical & Ethical Dilemmas for the Curious & Concerned
Author: Jacob M. Appel
Published Date: 2019-10-08

“Appel's scenario approach works well, as readers are challenged to weigh the morality of decisions in our increasingly complex medical world. An easy-to-digest compendium of bioethical issues that provides plenty of food for thought.”—Kirkus Reviews “A fascinating and thought-provoking book that should appeal to everyone—doctors, patients, and cloned Neanderthals alike.” —A. J. Jacobs, bestselling author of The Year of Living Biblically “Important and provocative. Physician, lawyer, and bioethicist: what a perfect trifecta for the author of a book on ethical issues in medicine.  I read it from start to finish in one sitting.”—Jon LaPook, M.D., Chief Medical Correspondent, CBS News   “Dr. Appel adroitly places the dangerous flames of ethical dilemmas into a terrarium for careful examination so we don’t burn ourselves.”—Mehmet Oz, M.D, Professor of Surgery, Columbia University, host or The Dr. Oz Show   “Dr. Appel in his extraordinary book has done a service for the public and health professionals by clearly illustrating the present and evolving medical ethical issues before us. This is a provocative and informative read for all!”—Richard Carmona, MD,MPH,FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States   “The most thorough set of challenges in tightly reasoned and highly readable scenarios that should be read not only by students and teachers, but by every member of Congress before they vote on issues with ethical implications, which is nearly every vote.  An important contribution to philosophy and science. I dare you to try a few.”—Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic Magazine, monthly columnist Scientific American, author The Moral Arc   “This book will enliven your dinner conversation for months to come. Not only is Who Says You're Dead? a lot of fun; its topic—how technology and ethics co-evolve—is of the utmost importance.”—William Poundstone, author of Head in the Cloud: Why Knowing Things Still Matters When Facts Are So Easy to Look Up   “I couldn’t put it down. Dr. Appel offers analyses that are spot on! Every medical student should be made to read this book.  Whether compelling them to do that is ethical or not is an easy choice.”—Joe Schwarcz, host of “The Dr. Joe Show” and author of A Feast of Science   “Who Says You're Dead? entertains as it educates.  Dr. Appel ranges from organ transplantation to embryo custody to voluntary castration and confidentiality laws and, yes, even to the cloning of Neanderthals.  It is an exotic journey, and strongly recommended.”—E. Fuller Torrey, author of Emerging Brains, Emerging Gods   “Jacob Appel is a doctor, lawyer, bio-ethicist, and terrific writer—the perfect person to pose fascinating ethical conundrums and guide us toward practical answers. The biggest messes in modern medicine result when medical technology outpaces medical ethics. This lively book helps right the balance.”—Allen Frances, MD, chair of the DSM-IV Task Force and author of Saving Normal   “When life seems too simple or dull, open this book. Pick a conundrum, any conundrum. Within a few minutes, you'll be transported into imagining your life as impossibly complex and your decisions absolutely vital. This is a fascinating exercise.”—Jay Allison, producer and host of NPR’s This I Believe Jacob M. Appel is a physician, attorney, and bioethicist who serves as an attending psychiatrist in the Mount Sinai Healthcare System. He teaches ethics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he is Director of Ethics Education in Psychiatry and a member of the Institutional Review Board. Appel has been a regular ethics columnist for Huffington Post and Opposing Views, and writes a monthly bioethics column for Education Update. A frequent lecturer on bioethical issues, Appel’s essays relating to bioethics have appeared in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other outlets. When not engaged in bioethics, Appel writes fiction: He has published novels, short fiction collections, and prize-winning stories.

“An original, compelling, and provocative exploration of ethical issues in our society, with thoughtful and balanced commentary. I have not seen anything like it.” —Alan Lightman, author of Einstein’s Dreams

Drawing upon the author’s two decades teaching medical ethics, as well as his work as a practicing psychiatrist, this profound and addictive little book offers up challenging ethical dilemmas and asks readers, What would you do?
  • A daughter gets tested to see if she’s a match to donate a kidney to her father. The test reveals that she is not the man’s biological daughter. Should the doctor tell the father? Or the daughter?
  • A deaf couple prefers a deaf baby. Should they be allowed to use medical technology to ensure they have a child who can’t hear?
  • Who should get custody of an embryo created through IVF when a couple divorces?
  • Or, when you or a loved one is on life support, Who says you’re dead?
In short, engaging scenarios, Dr. Appel takes on hot-button issues that many of us will confront: genetic screening, sexuality, privacy, doctor-patient confidentiality. He unpacks each hypothetical with a brief reflection drawing from science, philosophy, and history, explaining how others have approached these controversies in real-world cases. Who Says You’re Dead? is designed to defy easy answers and to stimulate thought and even debate among professionals and armchair ethicists alike.

Title: Dancing with Bees Pdf A Journey Back to Nature
Author: Brigit Strawbridge Howard
Published Date: 2019
Page: 304

Kirkus Reviews―A British naturalist offers crisp essays on her relationship with bees. In her debut book, Howard, a devoted bee advocate, pens a lengthy, knowledgeable, and occasionally poetic tribute to honeybees, bumblebees, and other buzzy creatures . . . [She] provides a nice balance between the very real science of studying bees and their function in nature and her cleareyed and eloquent observations about the natural world. Because of that balance, what might have sounded like a dry lecture turns into something far more interesting. Whether she's explaining how different bee species are classified, describing her mother's deteriorating health (and eventual death), or simply ruminating on the beauty around her, Howard creates a text that is compelling and worth your time even if you're not a fellow bee advocate."Library Journal―"[A] fascinating and wide-ranging exploration of nature. . .This satisfying memoir of a woman’s reawakening to the importance of nature in her life will appeal to fans of natural history memoirs, bees, the natural world, or ecology."Booklist, Starred Review―“[An] engaging, richly descriptive tale of natural discovery."“In this delightful book, Brigit Strawbridge Howard brings us into the fascinating and often overlooked world of bees. She introduces us to solitary nesting bees that lay their eggs in empty snail shells, cuckoo bees that make other bees take care of their eggs, and the amazing social lives of bumblebees and honeybees. Her curiosity and wonder at these small creatures are infectious and will inspire a greater appreciation of our natural world.”―Nancy J. Hayden, coauthor of Farming on the Wild Side“Hovering through Brigit Strawbridge Howard’s remarkable encounters with bees, alighting on beautiful and often unexpected descriptions of bumblebees, miner bees, and even parasitizing cuckoo bees, one dips into a world most of us have forgotten. By leading us gently and discretely into the minutiae of nature, Brigit shows how rewarding it is to reconnect―how the world’s tiniest beings can not only lift our spirits, but signal the way to a richer, wilder future.”―Isabella Tree, author of Wilding“Dancing with Bees is a passionate hymn to nature, a joyful celebration not just of bees, but of the power of paying attention. Strawbridge Howard’s rediscovery of the natural world is infused with a sense of wonder both irresistible and infectious. And the promise of this beautiful book is that if we take the trouble to notice our natural surroundings, we too can find a way to reconnect not just to nature, but to a deeper sense of ourselves.”―Caroline Lucas, MP, former Green Party Leader“I devoured this book as I would a jar of exquisite honey. I was as fascinated by it as I would be watching a hive of bees at work. I may read another nature book this year, but not a better one. Or a more important one. As is made so manifestly clear in these pages, we need our bees. Thank God, then, for Brigit Strawbridge Howard, our queen bee-advocate.”―John Lewis-Stempel, author of Still Water and Meadowland“Dancing with Bees is one of the most important and accessible and entertaining books I’ve ever read. Brigit has poured meticulous detail and research into her book, which has left me with even more respect for our precious bees than I ever thought possible. What’s more, it’s a touching, sensitive account of what makes us human and how we connect to the natural world. Everyone should read it.”―Kate Bradbury, author of Wildlife Gardening and The Bumblebee Flies Anyway“A beautiful book and one that hums with good life. Brigit Strawbridge Howard came late to bees but began noticing them at a time when their going was being widely announced. Her attention has been clear-sighted but also loving. By looking closely at the hummers and the buzzers, she has begun to take in the whole of what Charles Darwin called the ‘tangled bank’ of life, where there are bees (and Brigit’s winning descriptions will help you know them) and there are plants, and there are other pollinators and nectar-seekers, including Homo sapiens. No other insect―surely no other animal―has had such a long and life-giving relationship with humans. Bees may well have shaped our evolution; our continued well-being is certainly dependent on them. Bees have long been part of our consciousness and art, buzzing in parables and fables and ancient and modern poems made out of their industry and their organisation and their marvellous sweet products. All that is in this book: It is ambrosia.”―Tim Dee, author of Landfill“While the plight of our overworked honeybees elicits much hand-wringing, the rest of Earth’s splendorous apian diversity has remained unjustly obscure. In this winning tribute to our black-and-yellow fellows, Brigit Strawbridge Howard celebrates the virtues of dozens of less heralded, but no less crucial, wild species―mining bees, leaf-cutting bees, mason bees, cuckoo bees. Like a bee herself, Strawbridge Howard is at once pragmatic and whimsical, flitting lightly between practical advice for crafting a bee-friendly garden and wise digressions about our manipulative relationship with nature. By the end of Dancing with Bees, you’ll wholeheartedly agree that these indispensable creatures should be extolled as ‘our equals, not our minions.’”―Ben Goldfarb, author of EagerBrigit Strawbridge Howard is a bee advocate, wildlife gardener and naturalist. She writes, speaks, and campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of native wild bees and other pollinating insects. She lives in North Dorset with her husband, Rob.

A naturalist’s passionate dive into the world of bees of all stripes--what she has learned about them, and what we can learn from them

Brigit Strawbridge Howard was shocked the day she realised she knew more about the French Revolution than she did about her native trees. And birds. And wildflowers. And bees. The thought stopped her―quite literally―in her tracks. But that day was also the start of a journey, one filled with silver birches and hairy-footed flower bees, skylarks, and rosebay willow herb, and the joy that comes with deepening one’s relationship with place. Dancing with Bees is Strawbridge Howard’s charming and eloquent account of a return to noticing, to rediscovering a perspective on the world that had somehow been lost to her for decades and to reconnecting with the natural world. With special care and attention to the plight of pollinators, including honeybees, bumblebees, and solitary bees, and what we can do to help them, Strawbridge Howard shares fascinating details of the lives of flora and fauna that have filled her days with ever-increasing wonder and delight.

Inland Download

ISBN: B07KNT5SXQ
Title: Inland Pdf A Novel
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The bestselling author of The Tiger’s Wife returns with “a bracingly epic and imaginatively mythic journey across the American West” (Entertainment Weekly).

In the lawless, drought-ridden lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893, two extraordinary lives unfold. Nora is an unflinching frontierswoman awaiting the return of the men in her life—her husband, who has gone in search of water for the parched household, and her elder sons, who have vanished after an explosive argument. Nora is biding her time with her youngest son, who is convinced that a mysterious beast is stalking the land around their home.

Meanwhile, Lurie is a former outlaw and a man haunted by ghosts. He sees lost souls who want something from him, and he finds reprieve from their longing in an unexpected relationship that inspires a momentous expedition across the West. The way in which Lurie’s death-defying trek at last intersects with Nora’s plight is the surprise and suspense of this brilliant novel.

Mythical, lyrical, and sweeping in scope, Inland is grounded in true but little-known history. It showcases all of Téa Obreht’s talents as a writer, as she subverts and reimagines the myths of the American West, making them entirely—and unforgettably—her own.

Praise for Inland

“As it should be, the landscape of the West itself is a character, thrillingly rendered throughout. . . . Here, Obreht’s simple but rich prose captures and luxuriates in the West’s beauty and sudden menace. Remarkable in a novel with such a sprawling cast, Obreht also has a poetic touch for writing intricate and precise character descriptions.”The New York Times Book Review (Editors Choice)

“Beautifully wrought.”Vanity Fair

“Obreht is the kind of writer who can forever change the way you think about a thing, just through her powers of description. . . . Inland is an ambitious and beautiful work about many things: immigration, the afterlife, responsibility, guilt, marriage, parenthood, revenge, all the roads and waterways that led to America. Miraculously, it’s also a page-turner and a mystery, as well as a love letter to a camel, and, like a camel, improbable and splendid, something to happily puzzle over at first and take your breath away at the end.”—Elizabeth McCracken, O: The Oprah Magazine

The Old American West Inland is basically two separate stories that are slowly and methodically woven as they build and merge. Inland is historical fiction with a dose of magical realism playing a role in both central characters journey. In 1893, Nora has settled in the Arizona Territory. At the beginning of the book her husband has left home to meet a water delivery after an extended drought. He leaves her with her two older sons that help publish the town’s newspaper, a younger son who lost sight in an eye after an accident, a female cousin that speaks to the dead and a wheelchair bound mother-in-law. Nora also converses with the dead, her daughter that died years before. Lurie is a Turkish immigrant whose disastrous childhood leads him to a life as an outlaw, running from the law and eventually ending up with the United States Army Camel Corp. Lurie is also haunted by ghosts of past mistakes. Interestingly, Nora’s story basically takes place over one day, while Lurie’s spans years.Obreht’s lyrical and expansive prose are first rate. Her characters are sympathetic and well developed. Her descriptions of Arizona’s sweeping wilds are evocative with each character confronting this harsh reality in his or her own way. That being said, it was not always to my liking. For me it lacked focus, which hampered the flow of the beautiful imagery. It took awhile for the story to percolate and then it meandered with too much attention to details that did not always interest me. Very unusual for me…. If I put the book down for more than 2 days, I lost my place and needed to re-read. While I usually appreciate duel story lines, this time I had a strong preference for one over the other…..which diluted some of the intended impact of the ending. Both story lines really need to carry equal weight. Still, there is enough to recommend about Inland, a historical tale of life in the unforgiving old American West.I'D GIVE IT 10 STARS IF I COULD! ★★★★★★★★★★ I grew up reading about the American West. I thrilled to the adventures of the cowboys and gunfighters and woodsmen and buckaroos, who, in my boyish fantasies, represented everything good about humankind: they were brave, strong, fearless, heroic, yet polite and good-hearted. My grandfather gave me a set of James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" when I was 9 or 10 and I immediately began reading every page, often after my folks thought I was asleep. When I was old enough to go downtown and discover used book stores, I bought and read a couple dozen, at least, classics by Zane Grey. On the radio I listened to Tom Mix (played by an actor named Curly Bradley) and Hopalong Cassidy. Cowpokes were my heroes; my late Uncle Reuben, whom I knew only from a photo of him aboard a horse, with a bandolero strung across his chest and shoulders, was my idol. So, to make a much longer story short, and keeping in mind that I am an old man, just a few months shy of 80, let me say that as I read "Inland," by Téa Obreht, I was stunned to realize that the fabled Great American Novel about the Great American West was not only mostly about a woman, it was written by a woman! Let me assure you that this was an epiphany, a wonderful, amazing discovery for this reader! There's no point in reiterating the two tales told by narrators whose stories finally, at the end of "Inland," intersect. Let me instead say that Obreht is more than a magnificent writer; she is among the very best American writers! She thinks like a shaman, she visualizes her dusty corner of Arizona like the best of our poets, she considers the human condition like a philosopher and she paints a portrait of Nora -- mother, wife, toiler on the small, hard-scrabble spread she shares with her family -- equal to any character portrayal by any author I've read! Nora's husband and two older sons are missing, gone on mysterious errands. Nora is left at home with her small son, Toby, her aged mother-in-law, an addled niece who's smarter than anyone thinks, and the ghost of a daughter who died years earlier. Let me say that the West, in :"Inland," as no doubt in real life, is populated by ghosts. The other narrator of "Inland" sees the ghosts, although they do not see each other. After reading this novel you'll never again feel completely alone, no matter how far you may find yourself out in the woods or on the desert sands!Have I heaped enough praise on "Inland"? If not, assume I am still heaping it on. This is more than a fine book, it's the best novel I've read in years.
