An inspiring true story about the twists of fate that challenge a couple’s expectations of love, marriage, and reliance.

Jennifer Acker and her husband had been married for eleven years when she was blindsided by a mysterious and undiagnosed incapacitation. Accustomed to their independent routines, they will have to reform both their lives to accommodate the enervating illness. As Jennifer’s sense of self falls away, however, the couple is struck again. Her husband’s “frozen shoulder” all but locks one side of his upper body, leaving him in excruciating pain, partially immobilized, and as dependent on Jennifer as she is on him. But their needs are not in competition. In communion and reciprocal caregiving, they learn to love—and to explore—each other anew.

Finding a Silver Lining As someone who has dealt with ME/CFS for over eight years now, I could deeply relate to the experiences described by this author. The writing brings her situation to life for the reader, and her ability to find positives within her intense challenges is heartening.A moving, candid quick read about relationship & health While I don't suffer from the serious chronic condition that Acker has weathered for years & describes in clear, unflinching language in this essay, I could really relate to this account of a marriage and the ways two people adjust (& sometimes fail to adjust) in the face of changing realities. As it happens, I'm two-plus weeks into a hideous sinus infection & my own husband of many years is dealing with a bad flare-up of sciatica, origin unknown. I hope this isn't just a case of misery loving company, but I found it both soothing & reassuring to read about how another couple managed the double-whammy of simultaneous illness/injury/disability. The occasional moments of humor & the acknowledgment of supportive family & friends keep the narrative connected to light; there's never any self-pity here. There's beautiful writing too, especially about learning to appreciate the natural world when forced to slow down. Ditto the passages about listening to music. I put Mendelsohn's "Hebrides Overture" on after Acker mentions listening to it with her husband. What a lovely soundtrack by which to read this deeply personal meditation on illness, convalescence, and staying in love.
